Glogster Assignment

Glogster seems really fun and a great interactive poster assignment for students. I liked how everything is online with no use of additional materials. Students can be as creative as they'd like incorporating other links from other websites such as videos or documentaries. This is such a great way to include technology in the classroom.

After doing some research on the website, I actually liked what I saw. The white board caught my attention and I would use that to expain and describe things that my students were still having trouble with. I could also use the chat as a way to help my students even more, if they have general questions about what was done in class or on a homework problem. I found this to be a great way to connect with my students outside the classroom.

Second Life

To all parent, My name is Ms. Duarte and as you may be aware of, some of the faculty here at our school are going to use virtual worlds. I on the other hand will not base my math classes all on virtual world but I would like you to be aware that your children will be using it at times in my classroom depending on the content I will be teaching. There were many factors in which I have included virtual worlds in my classroom. For one, this will be a completely new learning opportunities for them to learn a different way than the traditional way they are taught. I will be including technology in a math classroom, then having them watch me write on the board all the time. Virtual worlds will be an opportunity for my students to learn differently in class and to make some connections in math. One important topic that I will cover with Virtual worlds is the use of Pi? What do you remember of pi? Is it a 3.14? Well my students will go beyond number that Pi has a numercal value of 3.14 because it is actually a number with more digits past that .14. They will study PI and where pi originated from, By the end of the unit,your children will have such a better understand of pi. There will be a unit covered on spheres and cubes and our study of volume and other shapes. As I mentioned previously, my class will not only depend on virtual worlds, but it will impact the learning style of your children for them to have a better understanding of the world of mathematics.

The live Binder I chose had to do with writing equations using slope and y intercept form. Lots of students are stuggling with this at my field work placement so this is something I would consider showing my students since it is an important unit in mathematics. The colors in the live binder helps students see visually the concept of writing equations.

Classroom Activity 1013

An activity that I chose was under Introductory Algebra and it was called "From words  to equations and back again". I chose this lesson because I recently just did a lesson plan for my methods course on Translating verbal expressions into algebraic expression. After navigating some lessons I found an this activity and came across an interactive worksheet to use in the classroom. I could use this and have my students work in groups on the worksheet so that it's not about just me teaching the lesson. They will then have a chance to share their solutions and discuss the results with the rest of the class.

Things that I like about Zoho Writer that makes it unique:

• 1. You don't need to have different tabs for a new page, they are directly above everything else.

• 2. You can get on it through a droid or iphone which are very popular in today's society.

• 3. It's free and you don't need to pay.

Things that I think Zoho Writer lacks in comparison to other word processors:

1. Spell check is not automatically on.

•  2. There are not that many font options.

• 3. There is so much going on, that I feel overhelmed trying to find my stuff.

I could integrate this program into my classroom by...

I could assign students to work on some math journals and how they could incorporate a lesson to real world situation. ​

How should the Book Review be Graded?

I personally believe the book review should be graded into two parts. One grade should be given as a group grade and the other should be an individual grade. I believe this for various reasons. For one reason, it is a group project. We should all work together and be graded based on the groups collaboration, effort, and consistency. A group grade should be 45%. Now there should be an individual grade since it's hard to tell in a group assignment how much work you did on your own. We did divide the chapters amongst my group for the book review so it is important to be graded on our effort and tasks we were assigned to complete. Our invidual grade should be 55%. I think having a combination would be fair for the group that way no one is taking credit more than others and we are being graded on what we put into as a whole and individually.

Intel or Thinkfinity Tools

After having explored a bit more on Intel thinking tools, I personally believe that it is something I would consider using in my math classrooms as a future teacher. There are many ways Intel thinking and thinkfinity can be used to make a math lesson so much more interested and promote higher thinking. For example, Intel thinking allows students to gather information they know, organize that knowlegde by displaying a map or a diagram, make a ranking list and comparing them, analyze a cause and effect relationship, and create a claim and support the evidence. Through these examples, students are able to think critically in a subject, and work as a group. Intel thinking is very interactive and allows students to work on some creative activities. I personally think it is something motivating that students would want to do since it involves using technology in a math classroom. I also thought the thinkfinity website was great. It has a lot of valuable resources that teachers can use to help teach an effective lesson. There a number of lesson plans, and interactive ideas that teachers can incorporate in their classroom. One of the things I found helpful was that some of the lessons plans are according to the New York state standards.

Podcasting in the Classroom

After viewing various podcasts and creating my own podcast tutorial, I strongly feel that podcasting can be very useful in a classroom. At first I sat there for a while thinking how in the world could I use a podcast to help teach mathematics in the class. There are many situations that I thought about in which I can incoporate podcasting in the classroom. For one thing I could use a podcasting for my students to share any news or media stories related to math. I've always heard students say "we'll never use math again" but now students will be able to make a connection in math with real life situations. Another situation in which I could use podcasting in the classroom would be by posting any homework, upcoming assignments and exam dates so that students won't come into the classroom not knowing what they have to do. From my experience in math classrooms, some of my teachers never gave us homework on fridays. Something that I would incoporate podcasting would be for my students to use a podcasts to create any math riddles, games, puzzles on the material they are learning and have them share it with the classroom.

Attention and Multitasking!

The section I reviewed was on Multitasking. Now a days students are very different than what they used to be back in the days. Now you see students bringing their laptops to their classes, and surfing the web as professors try to lecture. The video made a good point that teachers also have to change their teaching styles to keep the students attention. The distraction caused my the web can be very frustrating and as a future teacher it would also be upsetting for myself to stand in front a class and notice that the attention is somewhere else. It can become very hard when teachers have to compete with this distraction. Many of the students believe they can multitask successfully, yet how much learning do they actually get from multitasking. From my own experience I have tried to multitask by either texting or using my itouch and trying to pay attention in the class. By the end of the lesson, I know that I did not understand the complete context so for me multitasking is not successful. One of the studens made a good point. He said if they are not up to date with technology, they can lose a job in their future. Schools are affected by technology each and everyday. Some teachers have to adjust their teaching styles to keep the students attention. I personally believe that I will try my hardest to be creative and use all the essential tools to create a warm and friendly environment for my students to learn math with any type of technology.

Computers in the classroom

I look forward to this taking this class this semster as I hope to learn so many programs that I could use for my future math classrooms. I was a bit nervous when I walked in because I don't feel too confident with my technology skills so I really hope to make the most out of this classroom and be a creative teacher in the future.
